Hello, my name is Simon. That's me above. I have been a vegetarian/semi-vegan for over 20 years now. This is my story.

My road to a more compassionate, cruelty-free lifestyle began the day, as a teenager, I made a small but significant alteration to my diet in order to rid myself of both asthma and eczema that had plagued me since birth.

How I cured my life-long suffering from asthma in a matter of months without using any special diets or drugs.

If you suffer from asthma you will know how scary and debilitating it can be not to be able to breath freely and naturally, to feel like you are drowning in thin air or being slowly strangled by an invisible hand.

That's what it felt like to me, awake in the early hours of the morning, head stuck out of the window desperately trying to suck enough air into my labouring lungs to keep me concious and alive.

Sometimes being so weak from lack of oxygen my mother had to push me around in a pram at an age when most other boys had long kissed goodbye to their 'baby transport'. It was embarrassing to say the least!

Drugs administered by an inhaler brought temporary belief but sooner or later the inevitable attack would return and I would feel like a 30 stone man was sitting on my chest.

It wasn't until my teenage years that, quite by accident, I read an article in a national newspaper about a mother with two children who both had the same affliction. The article reported that she had stopped giving them cow's milk to drink and within a matter of weeks their condition had improved.

Intrigued and desperate for any solution to my problem, I too immediately stopped drinking cow's milk. The effect, though not immediate, was bordering on miraculous!

Within weeks my attacks became less frequent and my reliance on my inhaler lessened. After a few months my breathing was free and easy and my inhaler stayed in it's draw, unused. And so it has remained to this day. In fact, I so rarely use an inhaler (I can't remember the last time I did!) it has gone rusty! I am now 44 and cannot honestly remember the last time I had an attack.

The same goes for my eczema.

Now I know the causes of asthma/eczema are many and varied and this might not work for everyone. I can only go on my own experience of how I have 'cured' my asthma by simply cutting cow's milk, and as much dairy as possible, out of my diet. It may or may not work for you. All I say is TRY IT. You've got nothing to lose and everything to gain.

You can easily replace cow's milk with plant-based milks such as soya, rice or almond milk and cut down your consumption of dairy as much as possible. I eat the odd pizza and lump of cheese every now and again without harm. Give it a few months and just see if your condition improves.

When I was a kid I used to have a fat file at my doctor's surgery because of my asthma. The last time I visited my GP, my previous visits had been so infrequent the file had barely two pieces of paper in it. When my Doctor enquired as to the reason behind my robust health, my change in diet appeared to be a revelation and much furious scribbling of notes followed.

It would seem that the apparent connection between my type of asthma and my diet just didn't figure in his philosophy. I recommend asking your health practitioner about it and see what he or she says.

I have been asthma-free and attack-free for decades, all because of one, small, life-changing decision. Whatever your problems, I know changing to a meat-free diet will definitely help your health. Why?
